Why Florida Homes Need Sump Pumps
Florida sits at or near sea level across most of the Tampa Bay area. The water table is high — in many Pinellas and Hillsborough County neighborhoods, groundwater sits just 18 to 36 inches below the surface. When the rainy season arrives and 6-inch rain events become weekly occurrences, that water table rises further, and it pushes against every foundation, crawl space, and low-lying area in its path.
Passive drainage — channel drains, downspout systems, yard grading — handles surface water effectively. But groundwater rising from below requires active removal. That’s what a sump pump does. It sits in a basin at the lowest point of the protected area, monitors water level via a float switch, and automatically pumps water out through a discharge pipe when the level gets too high.

Sump Pump System Components
- Basin (pit) — Excavated pit lined with a perforated or solid basin that collects water from the surrounding area
- Submersible pump — Sits inside the basin, activates automatically via float switch when water reaches set level
- Discharge pipe — Routes pumped water away from the foundation to a safe discharge point
- Check valve — Prevents backflow from returning water to the basin when the pump shuts off
- Float switch — Activates and deactivates the pump at preset water levels
- Battery backup (recommended) — Maintains pump operation during power outages — critical during Florida storms

Site Assessment

Basin Excavation
Basin pit is excavated to the appropriate depth and diameter, basin liner installed, and gravel bed established.
Pump & Pipe Install
Pump installed in basin, discharge pipe routed to the outfall point, check valve and float switch configured.
Test & Walkthrough
System tested with water to confirm activation, pump rate, and discharge. You’re shown how to monitor and maintain.
